How SNAP Eligibility Is Determined
Gross Income Test
Your total household income before any deductions must be at or below 130% of the Federal Poverty Level. That's $1,580/month for one person or $3,250 for a family of four in the 48 contiguous states. BBCE states can have limits as high as 200% FPL. If your gross income exceeds the limit for your state and household size, you generally won't qualify — unless you're in a BBCE state with dependent household members.
Net Income Test
After subtracting allowable deductions (earned income deduction, standard deduction, shelter costs, dependent care, medical expenses for elderly/disabled), your remaining net income must be at or below 100% of FPL. For a single person, that's $1,215/month net. For a family of four, it's $2,502. Households with elderly or disabled members only need to pass the net income test, not the gross.
Asset Test (If Applicable)
Most states don't check your assets anymore thanks to BBCE. But in states that do, countable resources (bank accounts, some vehicles) generally can't exceed $2,750 — or $4,250 if someone in the household is 60+ or disabled. Your home, retirement accounts, and most personal property don't count. Check your state's specific rules to be sure.

What Happens After You Apply
Within 7 days: If you qualify for expedited service (income under $150/month and resources under $100), you'll receive benefits within a week.
Within 30 days: Standard processing. You'll get a letter with your approval or denial, and if approved, your EBT card will be mailed.
After approval: Benefits are loaded onto your EBT card on a set schedule each month. Most states deposit benefits on different days based on your case number or last name.
